Cooking at home is usually the healthier and cheaper option but some might steer clear of cooking at home with fresh ingredients because of the time it takes to prepare a meal. There are ways to cut down on the time it takes to prepare a meal by using kitchen appliances to help with the process.

It is so much easier to have a few kitchen appliances on hand when it comes to cooking meals. One of the best appliances to have in the kitchen is a large food processor that grinds, chops, slices, and purees. The full explanation can be found at http://lisacooking.com/2012/04/02/the-pull-out-kitchen-appliance-caddy/ It is not so hard to prepare meat but when it comes to chopping up vegetables, grinding nuts, slicing vegetables for salads and making soups the process can be much easier when using a processor. Cutting and chopping vegetables by hand to a uniform size can take a very long time depending on how many cups the recipe calls for. Slicing vegetables into attractive pieces can also take a long time when preparing a fresh salad. There is no need to sacrifice fresh and healthy food. When using a processor with the right attachments food preparation can go from all day to just minutes.

Spices and seasonings can elevate your food from bland to exciting. Many confuse the word “herb” with “spice”. Herbs come from the leaves of a plant, while spices come from the seed, fruit, berry, or bark. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice are commonly known spices, frequently used in baking. However, they can also add flavor to savory dishes. Use these to enhance cream sauces, like when making stroganoff. Cumin, coriander, curry, ginger, and turmeric give a bold, exotic flavor to a dish. These are commonly used in Indian, Thai, and Asian dishes.

Spices are often blended with herbs and salts in pre-packaged bottles. Is this new to you? Catch up here This is a convenient way to purchase spices and try new flavor profiles. Rubs are spice and seasoning blends used on meats to create a “blackened” taste. Five spice powder is used in cooking Chinese food and can enhance stir-fry. Jamaican jerk spice is another common seasoning blend used to enhance chicken with a Caribbean flair.

When working with spices and seasonings, start with a “gentle hand”. Too much seasoning can overwhelm your palate and overpower a dish. Start with a little. You can always add more. Do not be afraid to try different herb and spice combinations.

There are plenty of things you can make from your beautiful garden vegetables. Often times I will make a large batch of vegetable soup and freeze or can the majority for the fall and winter months. However, nothing beats a delicious vegetable stir fry made with fresh zucchini, yellow squash, onions, and tomato or red bell pepper.

First bring in one or two of each item depending on how many will be eating. Chop everything bite size, I usually slice the zucchini and squash. Then toss all the cut vegetables in about 2 Tablespoons of olive oil. Stir fry over medium high heat and add preferred seasonings. To keep the Asian theme you can add sesame seeds, salt, garlic, coriander and thyme. Another idea is to use Italian seasoning and Parmesan cheese.

The vegetable mix is done when they are fork tender, usually around ten minutes tops. Asian style stir fry can be served over a bed of brown or white rice. Italian style vegetables can be served over pasta and drizzled with balsamic vinegar. It is always a refreshing dish to serve in the summer, and is especially mouth watering when you have extra fresh vegetables direct from your garden. Honestly nothing beats the taste of home grown goods.

Simple, healthy and quick breads make great gifts for anyone. How often have you met someone who does not like homemade bread? And with today’s health awareness going on, there is no way that anyone could turn down a wholesome, healthy home-made treat that reminds them of the grandmother’s in story-books.

Homemade breads are on the rise, and the endless recipes for quick, healthy loaves is ever-growing.
Most homemade breads are made with whole-wheat/white flour which contain gluten, so be sure that the receiver of the gift is not gluten-intolerant or on a gluten-free diet.
When making homemade breads, don’t be afraid to experiment and see if you can come up with a loaf entirely your own to use as gift. A homemade gift-especially something like bread-is always a well-liked gift, but coming up with a recipe all your own to include with the bread is something that may even encourage creativity in the kitchen for them.

A quick homemade bread is always a great recipe to have ready, but find one that works best for you and your lifestyle and one that you are comfortable with before whipping it up and passing it on. Bread making is to a certain extent an art for some. And when giving a gift as special as homemade bread, you want to put you all into it, not just your flour.
